The linear depolarisation ratio indicates the type of scattering objects, i.e., it allows for a distinction between aerosol particles and liquid cloud droplets and ice crystals. This is possible, as all types of backscattering objects show a distinct depolarisation ratio based on the different refractive indices and resulting phase functions for the polarized signals.
